INSIGHT SCHEME
OSBORNE CLARKE

The two-day insight scheme for first-year law and second-year non law students is designed to give you an insight into life as a lawyer at Osborne Clarke. You will gain hands-on experience in one of the teams, will be equipped with the tools you need to apply for a vacation scheme with Osborne Clarke, and will gain a true insight into the firm from Partners and the recruitment team. You will also get the opportunity to informally network with the trainees of the firm to find out more about their experiences.

Details:
Date: Each two-day placement will run over the Easter break in London, Bristol and Reading.
Eligibility: You will either be a first-year law student or second-year non-law student at university.
Deadline: 28th February 2021.

BARCLAYS LEGAL EXPERIENCE WEEKS
ASPIRING SOLICITORS

Every year, Barclays provides 50 Aspiring Solicitors members with a one week work placement with Barclays Legal Team at Barclays’ headquarters in Canary Wharf. During this week, you will be offered a unique insight into the working of an in-house legal function and how it supports a world leading financial institution. You will have access to keynote legal speakers during a panel session, you will gain employability skills and will be able to do some work shadowing in the Barclays Legal Function.

Details:
Date: 7th -11th September 2021 & 14th -18th September 2021.
Eligibility: You must be an Aspiring Solicitor member, must not have accepted a training contract with a law firm or legal team, must not have attended a BLEW before, must have an interest in pursuing a legal career and must have achieved or be on target to achieve a 2.1 in your degree (but they will consider mitigating circumstances).
Pay: Unpaid, but reasonable travel expenses for journey’s outside London reimbursed (not including accommodation or travel within London).

SMART START
ALLEN & OVERY

Every summer, magic circle firm Allen & Overy gives young people from state schools access to a high-quality work experience programme in their London office. Through Smart Start, Allen & Overy give students (who are either eligible for free school meals or will be the first generation in their family to go to university) the skills necessary for a career in law through analysis, commercial awareness and negotiation to presenting and team working. The Smart Start Experience started in 2009 and has supported over 1,500 students. It is also accredited by City & Guilds, meaning for all students who attend the full week-long programme in London and who pass City & Guild’s assessment criteria gain a formal certificate of achievement and digital badge to share online. Students also gain access to a business mentor throughout the following academic year to help with taking the next steps in higher education or employment.

Eligibility:
Students must:
– Be in year 12 and attending, and have always attended, a state-funded, non fee-paying school/college AND
– Have been in receipt of Free School Meals, Pupil Premium, Education Maintenance Allowance and/or 16 to 19 Bursary whilst at secondary school OR
– Would be the first generation in their family to attend university

Students could also meet one of the following criteria:
– Have been looked after or are currently in local authority care
– Are, or have been, a full-time or part-time carer
– Came to the UK as a refugee or asylum seeker
– Have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 and a maximum of 5 at grades 9-7 (that is a minimum of 5 at grade C and a maximum of 5 at grades A*-A in the old system)
The more criteria you meet, the more likely you are to be offered a place on the programme.
Pay: Unpaid, but Allen & Overy will reimburse reasonable travel expenses with receipts.

EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME
WOMBLE BOND DICKINSON

Womble Bond Dickinson’s Experience programme is suitable for students aged 16 or above who are studying towards their A-Levels and looking to secure their first work experience. The Experience programme offers the opportunity to spend a number of days across the business, gaining experience within the business and how teams successfully work together.

Inspire offers two hour workshops throughout the year where you will be introduced to Womble Bond Dickinson, the range of careers available in a law firm and some of the skills that are important for your future.

Insight offers those aged 16 years and above a chance to learn more about Womble Bond Dickinson and career paths. It will run across one day and you will take part in a variety of activities to build on your skills and will have the opportunity to network with peers, meet colleagues and learn more about team work, negotiation, research and other important skills.

PRIME

Prime is a collection of leading law firms who support social mobility and wish to promote social mobility in the legal profession. These firms offer work experience to young people from Years 9 to 13. This will generally involve shadowing a lawyer, attending meetings and assisting with research tasks, and placements usually last around a week.

Date: Differs per firm.
Eligibility:
Students must:

  • Be in Years 9-13 (England & Wales), Year 3 to 4, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth (Northern Ireland)
  • Be state-school educated
  • Be the first to attend University in your family

You must also meet one or more of the following:

  • Currently in receipt of, or have previously received, free school meals, Pupil Premium, Education Maintenance Allowance and/or 16-19 Bursary
  • You have been, or are currently, in local authority care (for a minimum of 3 months)*
  • You are or have been a carer
  • You came to the UK as a refugee or asylum seeker
  • You are attending a state school or college with:
    a) below average A-Level or higher point score and/or
    b) low rate of progression to higher education

*If you have been in care, you do not need to meet any other requirements

CAREER KICK START
Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner

The BCLP Career Kick Start Work Experience Programme is designed to provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Year 12 with a detailed insight into what it is like to work in a City law firm.

The placement compromises two weeks.

Details:
Week one: A week at BCLP’s offices, gaining a real insight into what lawyers do on a daily basis via work shadowing, as well as information on the different routes in to the profession and a number of skills sessions to help prepare you for the world of work.
Week two: A week visiting a different organisation each day in a variety of sectors – including sports, financial services and media. During the week you will learn how law firms interact with their clients and the different roles for lawyers in these organisations. There will be plenty of opportunities to build your personal network and speak to people from all of the different organisations involved.

Eligibility:
Students must:

  • Be in Year 12
  • You are state-school educated
  • You grew up in a household where no parent/guardian attended university

Students should also meet one of the following:

  • You are or have been in receipt of free school meals, Pupil Premium, Education Maintenance Allowance and/or 16 to 19 Bursary
  • Have been, or are in care
  • Arrived into the UK as a refugee or asylum seeker
  • Have been/is a full-time carer
  • Are state-school educated with below average A-Level or Higher point score

INSIGHT EVENT
HOGAN LOVELLS

The Hogan Lovells Insight Event runs across two days and involves interactive tailored workshops, presentations, networking opportunities and teaches you a strong understanding of the day-to-day work of a trainee solicitor. You, a first-year university student, will learn practical tips on how to gain commercial awareness and will be able to ask questions, soak up application advice for a vacation scheme or a training contract and learn lots about virtual interviews and assessment days.

VIRTUAL WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMS
FORAGE

Forage (formerly InsideSherpa) offers programs which allow students to build career skills, gain experience and increase their understanding of different careers. They are free for all students and can be added to your CV (in accordance with Forage’s referencing policy) with most averaging around 5-6 hours to complete in your own time.

White & Case are a global commercial law firm and spans across 44 offices in 30 countries.

The Insight Scheme is ran over two days and is specifically designed for first year students from any degree discipline to help you introduce you to many areas of law. You will receive useful guidance on ways in which you can begin to strengthen your future applications and meet different members of the firm. You will also shadow a trainee solicitor which will provide insight into the day-to-day role of a trainee solicitor within the firm. By applying, you may gain yourself an advantage in being accepted onto their vacation scheme.
